Succeeding in Education in French Universities : Methodology Workshops in UEE

Year 2021-2022

« Succeeding in Education » Workshops of UEE are exempt by teachers in university (titulaires ou doctorants) by a voluntary way, they are directed at all levels and aim to acquaint the new students in the working of the french university, to evolve the basic skills (Labour organization, oral interventions, note writing, restudying, etc) or more specific skills in order to respond to the requirements of your university training course (for example, learning how to write an essay, an internship report, advice for the record…). They are also a place of meeting, discussion and expression of difficulties, for exiled students.

Conditions:

You can register independently for one or more than one workshop, or for all workshops, depending on availability. A certificate of attendance can be issued at the end of workshops. The workshops are open to all students, without conditions. it’s however for people with an acquired B1 level of French. They are free workshops and are held on the dates indicated below at the Maison des réfugiés (50 boulevard Jourdan, 75014 Paris)

The Program:

Workshop 1: The first steps in university (2h)

Moderator (s): Alison Bouffet (doctoral student, University of Paris) and Khair Alhareth (MCF, University of Paris)

Date: Friday Octobre 01, 6-8 p.m.

Objectives of the session:

  • Presentation of the French university system
  • Dictionary of higher studies in France
  • Exercise: knowing how to write an email to a teacher

Workshop 2: Round table – meeting with exiled students (2h)

Date: October 15, 6-8 p.m.

Objectives of the session:

  • Meeting with exiled students who have finished a course of study

Workshop 3: Getting organized to succeed at university (2h)

Moderator: Alison Bouffet (doctoral student, University of Paris)

Date: October 29, 2021, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Objectives of the session:

  • General advice and discussion around the difficulties encountered at the university
  • Organization of work and reviews
  • Resources for getting organized
  • Exercise: specify your study project

Workshop 4: Take notes in class (2h)

Moderator: Alison Bouffet (doctoral student, University of Paris)

Objectives of the session:

  • Note taking in progress: feedback on your experiences
  • Principles of note taking
  • Exercise 1: highlight the important elements of a text
  • Exercise 2: take a note of a course extract

Workshop 5: Intervening orally (2h)

  • Have confidence to express yourself orally
  • The structure of the presentation
  • The importance of the presentation medium
  • Presentations and advice

Workshop 6: Revise and learn (2h)

  • Active reading
  • Know how to file a book, a course; the different files
  • The graded reading sheet

Workshop 7: Methodology of research at the university (2h)

Objectives of the session:

  • Where can I find scientific references? Online resources and online resources library
  • Avoid plagiarism: know how to quote, reference
  • Management advice for bibliographic sources

Workshop 8: The dissertation in human sciences 1 (2h30)

Objectives of the session:

  • General reminders for all academic writing
  • The essay: basic principles
  • Know how to read the subject
  • look for the main subject
  • Group exercise: identify the subject and a plan from a subject
  • Make an essay plan
  • Group exercise: plan a dissertation
  • Introduction and conclusion

Workshop 9: The dissertation in human sciences 2 (2h)

Objectives of the session:

  • An essay subject will be given to everyone at the start of the session.
  • 1h of writing (intro, outline, conclusion)
  • Collective proofreading
  • Personalized advice to improve essay writing
  • Writing tips: logical connectors and language level

Workshop 10: The internship and the internship report 1 (2h)

  • Search for an internship: write emails, present your CV and cover letters
